We see millions of children wanting to take part in sport but in some cases, their self-esteem suffers as they do not receive the support and coaching that brings the best out of them. The Sports/School Life Success (SLS) coaching protocol provides an excellent solid resource for coaches, teachers and parent to get the best out of the children they work with or support whilst improving their happiness, confidence and performance in a way that is enjoyable. The SSCLS coaching protocol helps develop a growth mindset in children. Research states that having a growth mindset can produce better life long outcomes, test results and self esteem through to adulthood and beyond.
Carol Dweck at Stanford University in a publication entitled ‘Mindset: the new psychology of success’ discovered that people who have a growth mindset believe that even if they struggle with certain skills, their abilities aren’t set in stone. She thinks that by praising on effort, their skills can improve over time. She goes on to say that students with the growth belief system tend to:
- Care about and invest themselves in learning;
- Believe that effort is a positive thing, causing their intelligence to grow;
- Try hard in the face of frustration and failure;
- Look for new learning strategies. These statements can easily be transferable to the field of sport and have the same affect.
By using the SSCLS coaching protocol, coaches, teachers and parents can play a critical role in developing young people to perform at their optimal potential by developing a growth mindset. The protocol can allow them to do this through engagement and fun. When this happens, good things happen and there is evidence that the SSCLS brings out this fun whilst providing the children with their own sense of achievement. Children need to learn and stay involved whilst growing in character and this protocol provides a guide to support anyone who is influential in a child’s journey to be instrumental in developing the essential traits needed in life such as: Positive internal motivation, creating positive relationships, learning to persevere and create a solid positive mental attitude. Please take up this amazing gift and implement it within your team/class as I am sure you will see a positive changes throughout.
